Leaving On A Jet Plane

Posted by special_child at 12:45 AM on June 7, 2006.

Family matters are always a bummer.

Last Friday was a mess. I was surprised that just the day before my aunt said that she'd leave, trying to get on the plane as a chance passenger (if you don't know, my aunt arrived almost a month ago for a vacation). So we (mom and I) carried her baggage and traveled by tricycle, bus, and taxi to the NAIA Terminal 1.

After my aunt got inside, my mom and I were left staring at a lot of people: foreigners waving goodbye to their hosts, mothers wiping the tears off their eyes, children yelping, husbands trying to hide their tears behind their child's head, stewardesses fixing their uniforms before entering the airport, guards endlessly shouting to passers-by... it's chaos inside and chaos outside.

Then, 15 minutes before the flight left, she came out of the airport with her trolley and said she wasn't accommodated in that flight. DARN! She had a lot of complaints, I was frustrated because I had to cancel my gimmick night, mom was mad that she had to carry bags back to Cavite again... Friday was forgettable. And so was Saturday (for a different reason).

But then again... I felt the emotion of those bidding goodbyes to their families. I even saw one man kissing his wife and shedding a tear afterwards. No other song came to mind but this, and this one's for them.

Leaving On A Jet Plane
performed by Chantal Kreviazuk

I'm ... I'm ...

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye

But the dawn is breakin', it's early morn
The taxi's waitin', he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could die

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go

'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go

I'm ...

There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I'll tell you now, they don't mean a thing

Every place I go, I think of you
Every song I sing, I sing for you
When I come back I'll wear your wedding ring

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go

'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go

Now the time has come to leave you
One more time, oh, let me kiss you
And close your eyes and I'll be on my way

Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the times that I won't have to say ...

Oh, kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go

'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go

And I'm leaving on a jet plane
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go

But I'm leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)
Leaving on a jet plane
(Ah ah ah ah)

Freedom!

Posted by special_child at 01:44 AM on June 14, 2006.

It was five scores and eight years ago when we got ours.

Now, there was absolutely no thrill celebrating our freedom. Why not? Well... there are a lot of suppressions the Filipinos are experiencing even with our so-called democracy. The press are now threatened or even killed... bombings everywhere... if I didn't know better, I'd assume that even these volcanoes spewing ash are included in the government's plan to terrorize the Filipinos to join the choo-arter choo-ange train.

Yesterday was our Independence Day. But are we independent? I don't think so. Yesterday was also our chance to celebrate freedom. But are we free? Hmmm... only physically (no offense meant to our fellowmen in Muntinlupa and other jails who are excluded in this classification). But we have lots and lots of burdens in our everyday life, we can't really classify ourselves as free.

Independence is very much different from freedom. But neither is satisfied completely when looking at our status as a nation. Yes, we are free, but we have certain privileges suppressed by the government in a not-so-fool-proof way. And by colonial mentality alone, we can say we are NOT independent.

A Prelude To Graduation

Posted by special_child at 04:01 AM on June 15, 2006.

A bad day can turn out good after all... then back to a bad one.

Graduation rehearsal can be a very chaotic day to the commencement participants. Imagine doing everything in a day... the baccalaureate mass, class picture taking, even the rehearsal itself. Add to that list the heat of the sun, a venue such as the sixth floor of the Sports Complex (in short, the topmost parking lot), lacking fans, AC's which are not in full blast (the campus is doing their "austerity measures", hoping this time it'll be true to its meaning; last time, it meant higher bills for La Salle), and togas that doesn't smell too good... it'd be more chaotic.

But of course, being the optimistic person that I am, I find that this day brought some possible mishaps that turned into positive outcomes. And all of these I'll summarize in my Top Ten List.

Top Ten Happenings The Past 24 Hours

10. I missed the academic attire (toga) distribution, and I learned that I won't be able to attend the class picture taking and baccalaureate mass because of it.
9. I stayed in the EA office: feeling depressed, filling up the alumni form, talking to Boboy, taping Ivy's ID on the door opening, greeting an ecstatic Ivy with a wicked smile (with her figuring out things 10 minutes after), seeing the two Allens, Jolenz, Marvin Q., Lai, JC Revano, Sherry, and Beck.
8. It's back to The Venue for lunch... and possibly the last time.
7. It's refreshing to see faces I haven't seen in two months, as opposed to seeing walls as a bum.
6. Pictures never seem to be amiss, as it was a good thing I didn't forget to bring mine (will upload pics as soon as bandwidth permits).
5. Speaking of pictures, it was nice that the whole ST block squeezed their way into just one BIG picture.
4. It's my first time to be in a Chicken McDo™ buffet. It was worth it... and also worth putting a moratorium on chicken for two weeks afterwards
3. I opened the topic of giving a reprimand to both Joseph and Rex, but I wasn't able to get the detailed explanation I needed.
2. During the baccalaureate mass, more precisely while The Lord's Prayer was sung, I got a certain call. Is it worth answering the call in an untimely manner? Hmmm...

-and... (drum roll please)-

1. A certain angel by the name of Janine Tolentino gave me the chance to attend those functions by lending me her academic attire. I will be grateful for as long as I see the class picture with me in it. Thanks!

Saturday is nearing... and after the ceremonies, it will officially be over.

The Graduate

Posted by special_child at 12:59 AM on June 23, 2006.

No, I'm not talking about the Dustin Hoffman movie.

I'm talking about me! And after taking a few days off the Internet, I want to share it to the world... or whoever's reading with me. I have finally marched my way to graduation!

This is my fifth graduation (prior graduations were two different kindergarten ones, another for elementary, and another for high school), and even though my rank in the graduating batch lowered through the years, I can easily say my maturity has moved the opposite way. I actually did not care about graduation when I was younger, I boohooed myself during high school... and now, not a single tear shed.

Yes, words weren't enough to express my jubilation in this time of celebration. But it didn't really get to my emotional side. Perhaps it's because I know I will still have lines of communication with my closest friends after graduation... or maybe no one was really into crying that day. It was really a joyous occasion that an impatient person like me endured a 3-hour program, even if 2 hours and 59 minutes of it featured people other than me.

Getting through college wouldn't have been possible if not for the people, the places, and the various institutions of inspiration that came and went. I would definitely miss everything that college offered me - of course, with academics being an exception.

Top Ten Stuff I Will Dearly Miss From College Life

10. Agno (most especially Tita Em's food stand and Manong C2)
9. Planet Gokongwei, the planets I've stayed in the longest aside from Mars and Earth
8. the computer labs, which gave me pseudo-fast Internet access and a place to do my MP's when I still had no computer (my whole first year)
7. the fact that I can cut classes
6. my college professors, who have served as inspirations and (sometimes) the butt of jokes
5. my friends from MMA
4. my friends from Gokongwei (from different Catches as well)
3. my Green & White 2006 family
2. my EA family

-and... (drum roll please)-

1. my S14 barkada!

Computer science is one of the toughest courses in De La Salle University, and even if I lost my drive come third year, I am still proud that I got through it in time.

P.S. Will there be another graduation for me? Hmmm... Let's see.

Do Not Eat Filipinos!

Posted by special_child at 02:31 AM on June 29, 2006.

Hmmm... something interesting... I think.

This blog entry was supposedly intended for the abuse of blogging power. I wanted to lash out my opinions on people who blog just to use it as a tool for measurement (number of hits, number of comments, number of tags... whatever). Yes, I know that blogs are edifices for personal opinions, and getting noticed for your opinions comes with placing it in a public domain such as websites and blogs. But then again, I'm not Madame Auring who's such a sound psychic to judge who's placing entries for fame and who's placing entries to please themselves. You know who you are.

Getting to the new topic of this entry... I received an e-mail from one of my colleagues telling that she signed an online petition. When I did check it out, well... it sounds really disturbing. Even if it's such a little note as just a word (remember the case of Filipina being defined by a famous lexicon as synonymous to domestic helper?), I saw it as a big deal. Hahaha.

I haven't done sound and significant research yet, but what I saw from this website truly astounded me... it's that famous, it's in Oreo's level already! But I just learned about it a few minutes ago. Hmmm...

Top Ten Stuff You'd Be Identified With If You're A Filipino Abroad

10. Filipinos Biscuits (I learned about it only today)
9. corruption
8. Manny Pacquiao
7. being honest
6. being hardworking
5. Asian
4. trying to find a spouse who's a foreigner
3. Japayuki (applies to Filipinas in Japan only)
2. TNT (of course, not trinitrotoluene)

-and... (drum roll please)-

1. domestic helper

What's with wrong connotations with Filipinos? Do you think it's payback for our colonial mentality? Or is it just coerced?
