Outside The Planet

Posted by special_child at 02:13 AM on February 2, 2006.

Today I missed the atmosphere that was Gokongwei.

I arrived for my class late (I can't see any change), so I did not attend my Chemistry class yet again. Some people might be wondering why I have Chemistry even though I am a Computer Science major? Well... darn our curriculum. Before 1 we (that's me, Anne, and Allan) left for the Job Expo.

We met a lot of people and companies that are hoping to get people who are hoping to get jobs. Since we entered during the UBreak, there were a lot of people around, and there were Gox aliens as well it felt like I was in a quadrilateral lobby. Yes, a lot of discriminations were made (e.g. "Ay 'wag tayo dyan, call center yan.", "Uy dun tayo, may free mug kasi.", "Pangit kaya dyan; walang travel benefits.", etc.) and it was hard to trim down where I would give my resumes since I only produced two. And some good companies were there only last Monday. So I left it with Dell and Siemens, which, if I may add some distinction, should have been left with Panasonic, but since there were so many people there and there were so-so people in Siemens's booth was left there.

Oh... before that, we went through the corridors of La Salle building scurrying amidst people rushing towards the chapel. If you still don't know, Brother Andrew Gonzales, President Emeritus of De La Salle University, has died. His remains lay at the DLSU Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel, and from the South Gate up to the second floor leading towards the chapel, there were loads upon loads of flowers. And this would be my Top Ten List for this entry.

Top Ten Flower Offerings for Brother Andrew Gonzales's Wake

10. ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation (more bamboo, less flowers)
9. Vibal Publishing House (one of the flower stands nearest the chapel)
8. from his high school batchmates (one of the most elegant)
7. from other universities (I saw the ones from NU and UST)
6. National Academy of Science and Technology (stenciled sign)
5. Nilo Rosas and Family (conveniently located away from prying eyes, I dunno why)
4. Senator Nene Pimentel and family (at the first floor)
3. (take note) President Joseph and Senator Loi Estrada (really huge and elegant; title takes away some luster, though)
2. Former President Fidel Ramos and family (again one of the nearest ones)

-and... (drum roll please)-

1. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (shunned away from the crowd, placed nearer to a classroom than to the chapel)

And it's clear that instead of flowers, Brother Andrew supposedly appreciates it more if the money spent would be donated to a charity in Apalit, Pampanga.

P.S. It's Starbucks tomorrow. I think I'd rather be a barista than a call center agent. Just my opinion.

Naiwan SIYA Sa MRT

Posted by special_child at 05:34 AM on February 11, 2006 as a favorite post.

And so you'd think this is a new post in Filipino.

NOT! This post, after a long period of not posting, would give you the details of one eventful Friday. In my side of the story, there was a ridiculous exam, a one-hour shopping spree, another hour of watching Survivor: Exile Island, a couple of hours making fruit shakes, and it's off to Makati.

After Allan left for home and Francis went to meet his friends, I went towards the front gate of CSB to meet Mito, Jaja, Mishi, Love, Luigi and R.A. (all of which are also bloggers here @ Tabulas, just want to share). After some chit-chat, we decided to go the LRT/MRT way of getting there. So after the usual unbreakable Friday-night crowd on both train lines, we penetrated the barriers (do not think of anything else) and went down towards the trains.

This time around, there were two trains waiting for departure at the Taft Station. Since there weren't a lot of people and our feet didn't touch the platform at the same time, there was a commotion as to which train we should board. I was pointing towards the one who had more passengers, and Mito was pointing towards the other train. When we tried to go inside the more occupied one, I tried to dissuade them and went outside. When they followed me, I went back to the crowded train. But seeing that everyone was going to the other train, I disembarked again. Then the warning signal sounded, and when I looked around it was exactly the time when the train's doors closed on... Love.

Yes, there was a lot of laughter. And it's not only from our side, but from the audience (strangers from both trains) as well. And with this mishap comes another unforgettable experience for the damsel in distress.

After Valen-times

Posted by special_child at 02:45 AM on February 17, 2006 as a favorite post.

Yes, the day of hearts is over.

And so starts my 20th year of waiting for that somebody. It's the nth time I dated my mother (take note: she wasn't happy either) and so far things have not changed. She still is the most wonderful woman I've ever met. Haha.

Valentine's day is not a holiday of obligation. It's not a big occasion to me. It's just a day... just an ordinary day (just tryin' to get by). And yes, as love was all around that day... I was busy attending to a chaotic tournament of Soul Calibur 3 and participating in an equally chaotic tournament of Tekken 5.

Valentine's day is a celebration for people, but not for me. It might mean a lot of things to couples, but not for me. Am I sounding too bitter? Maybe. But I am in full support of that day and of the couples that have celebrated the day in their own ways. Maybe I shared my bitterness with my groupmates when I told them, "Bawal ang may date sa Tuesday ha! Kailangang magbantay ng booth."

Valentine's day has passed 20 times in my entire life, beating Halley's Comet. But for the first 5 years I had no idea what Valentine's day is. The next 5 said I was too young to celebrate it. The five years after that found me looking for one (though I was not serious in any way). And the last five (including this year) opened my eyes about love... and how nice it is to date your mother as if she were some sugar mommy.

So much for people who are born in November. There still are more people born in March. So as long as there are many who want to be June brides, there are many who will be born in March.

Top Ten Things That Remind Me, "Hey! Valentine's Day is fast approaching!"

10. "My Funny Valentine" (the song done by lots of people)
9. "Valentine" (the song by Jim Brickman featuring Martina McBride)
8. "Valentine" (the movie starring David Boreanaz and... Katherine Heigl?)
7. Oscar nominations are already given out
6. that "N days to go before Valentines" sign at Blue Magic
5. too much news about flower prices soaring like oil prices
4. Close-Up commercials reminding about Lovapalooza 20XX
3. my passport's birthday is fast approaching (it was born 14 February 2005)
2. Star Cinema and GMA Films advertise Filipino chick flicks "coming this February"

-and... (drum roll please)-

1. me thinking of someone to date other than my mom

Let me share with you this particular intention I heard from the Prayers of the Faithful during mass last Sunday. It said: "That our young people may not use Valentine's day as a pretext to behave irresponsibly and indulge in sinful behavior, let us pray!" I sure hope no one did!

P.S. If many people did, then hooray to our population growth time come November!

Blame Game

Posted by special_child at 01:07 AM on February 20, 2006.

FAD: http://kevan.org/johari?name=Marvin+John

Something happened this Sunday morning. And it's SO nice I can't help but share it with you, my blogmates. And also to the few visitors this site might drag.

When I had mass this morning, the priest discussed a very delicate topic. It talked about forgiveness. He presented the topic this way (and I'm paraphrasing this from Fr. Armand Robleza, SDB). Imagine you were tasked to buy something, but it was so hot you didn't go out. When you are asked if you bought it or not, you answer no. And then you go on ranting, "The sun was too hot."

So why are you blaming the sun? The priest points out that it's your decision that caused you not to finish the task. It's a refreshing feeling that it's just your decision that's forcing you to do things your way. In short, if ever something goes wrong, no one's to blame but yourself.

Even the decision of forgiving others, even forgiving yourself, is upon your hands. Keeping burdens, according to Fr. Robleza, is like keeping a "rotten banana" and carrying it with you wherever you go. In his logic (and in mine too, though not carried out often), why should you carry a rotten banana when it doesn't do you any good? So... what to do? Dispose the banana immediately.

I really feel enlightened by what he spoke of during the homily. I promise I've never been that awake before in a homily. So thanks to that.

Blogger's Note: No Top Ten List for today. Just go out and contribute to the fad.

My closing statement? "Magtanim (ng galit) ay 'di biro!"
